区别辨析fame、honour、reputation、glory与renown

这些名词均有“名声,名誉”之意。

fame : 普通用词,含义广,一般指好名声,可大可小,可远可近。

  • At the height of his fame, his every word was valued.
    在他声名鼎盛之时,他的每句话都受到重视。

honour : 侧重指因高尚的举止,忠心或诚实而受到公众钦佩和崇敬,得到好名声和荣誉。

  • upholding the honour of your country
    捍卫祖国的荣誉
  • The family honour is at stake.
    家族名声系于一线。
  • Most of the high honours usually go to long-serving MPs loyal to the government.
    大多数的高级荣誉通常都会授予忠于政府的资深议员。

reputation : 通常指熟悉某人或某地的人对该人、该地的看法,可好可坏。

  • She was by reputation a good organiser.
    听说她的组织能力很强。
  • The stories ruined his reputation.
    这些传闻把他的名誉全毁了。

glory : 指因功绩卓著而获得的令人称颂的光荣或荣誉地位。

  • Olympic glory in the 100 metres
    奥林匹克100米赛跑的桂冠
  • I do all the work and he gets all the glory.
    活儿都是我干,荣誉都是他得。
  • He came home a rich man, covered in glory.
    他发迹还乡,荣归故里。

renown : 指远近闻名的声誉。

  • She used to be a singer of some renown.
    她曾是位小有名气的歌手。
  • It's just these heart-thrilling chapters that brought his work world renown.
    正因这些扣人心弦的篇章才使得他的作品举世闻名。
